CAMP BASE CAMP

CAMP BASE CAMP: FRIENDS FOR EVEREST
CREATIVE RESEARCH LABORATORY, AUSTIN TEXAS
collaboration with Peter Reichardt & Kristyn Weaver

EXPLORERS WE, EXPLORERS THREE
INTREPID, INTRUSIVE, INTRINSIC, INCLINED. A SUMMIT. A SNEAKING PEAK.

Traditionally, climbers stall at base camps to rest, acclimatize, and prep before beginning their journey to the summit. Our base camp served as an aesthetic exploration of relationships, a collaborative trio stalled at the conception of an idea, a triumvirate treading water at their beginnings and pulling up the roots of their problems. This project explored the thin line between exploration and exploitation as the artists visually engaged in an intensive social self-intervention within the camp. Referencing the three-sided shape of mountains and the triangular nature of human relationships, the base camp was a space for dialogue, exchange, and assumptions. Tents, food, blankets, lights and other necessary staples of survival served as the nexus between the three diverse practices of the artists involved. Work produced within the space will included a large-scale site-specific drawing, sculptural illusions, textile-based craft, visual collage, costuming, performance, and archives of correspondence. The work was constructed and performed during the installation period, resulting in an elaborate and interactive artifact-space that was been evidenced for exploration by the public.
