COLLECTING KOLDERVEEN took place during a collaborative residency with Monique Besten, Jason Ferguson, and Christian French. We lived and worked together in a small village in east Drenthe, using an old cheese factory as our gallery and studios. Each artist pursued their own projects in relation to the local community. My work was based on homes-away-from-home and explored the foundations for making home in a new and foreign community. I spent my days walking to the edges of town and collecting fallen branches with which I built my interpretive home. The meditative practice of walking and collecting gave me an opportunity to interact with the landscape and the locality of Kolderveen. Before long, my nest-home was filled with small gifts from folks I had met during my long walks through the countryside. I lived in this installation during my time there, letting it become a microspace for meaningful sharing and a micro-gallery for objects of Welcome.
